One number. Not a spreadsheet.

How much can I safely spend today?

DollarSafe protects the money you already owe to something else — bills, savings goals, account minimums — and shows you what is genuinely left for today. Nothing to categorise. Nothing locked.

Manual or connected accounts No envelope categories required Recommendations, never lockouts

What the number means

Safe to Spend is what's left after everything already promised

Your bank tells you a balance. A balance includes rent. DollarSafe starts from the cash you actually have, subtracts what is already committed, and divides what survives across the days left in your cycle. It recalculates continuously.

The maths, in the open

Every input is visible in the Plan screen, so the number is never a black box.

Money available$2,000
Bills protected$900
Savings protected$100
Account floor$500
Spendable money$500
÷ 10 days remaining$50.00
How spendable money is derived A bar chart. Money available of $2,000 is reduced by $900 of protected bills, $100 of protected savings and a $500 account floor, leaving $500 of spendable money, which divided by 10 remaining days gives $50 for today. Money available $2,000 − Bills protected $900 − Savings protected $100 − Account floor $500 = Spendable money $500 ÷ 10 days remaining in the cycle $50.00 today
The same calculation, drawn to scale.

It rolls forward

Safe today is $50 and you spend $40? The unspent $10 stays in the pool. Tomorrow recalculates from your new balance and the new day count. Money never expires at midnight.

Overspending is absorbed, not punished

Spend $70 against a $50 day and the engine records −$20 and gently lowers future discretionary amounts. Your plan is adjusted, not ruined.

You can always ask "why did this change?"

Every move in the number comes with an itemised log: paycheck deposited, electric bill protected, purchases, unused amount carried forward.

The Golden Rule

DollarSafe never counts money that does not exist yet as spendable.

Future paychecks appear in your plan so you can see what is coming, but they do not raise Safe to Spend until the money is actually in the account. If you have $1,400 in checking and $1,500 arriving Friday, today's number is built on $1,400.

Future paychecks are shown but not counted A timeline. Today's checking balance of $1,400 is counted as available. Friday's expected paycheck of $1,500 is displayed for planning but excluded, so the calculation still uses $1,400. TODAY COUNTED $1,400.00 In the account, right now FRIDAY SHOWN, NOT COUNTED $1,500.00 Expected paycheck Safe to Spend is calculated on $1,400 — not $2,900.
Expected income is planning information, not available cash.

The four home states

Plain language, no finance jargon

The home screen is always in one of four states. Each one explains itself, and a negative allowance is never displayed as a negative number.

Safe

$42.75

Comfortable room today. Bills, goals and floors are all covered.

Tight

$6.20

Still positive, but thin. Spending here pushes the next few days down.

$0 Today

$0.00

Nothing discretionary left for today. Everything you hold is committed elsewhere.

Shortfall

$0.00

You're $37 short of covering your current plan. The app shows exactly what is short.

The number never goes negative on screen.

If the maths yields a negative result, the headline reads $0.00 and the line underneath explains the gap — for example "You're $37 short of covering your current plan." A danger state must explain why, not just glow red.

Spillover

Overspend draws from the least important money first

When a day goes over, DollarSafe works down a fixed order. Protected money is the last thing considered, and it is never taken quietly.

Spillover order when you overspend Four stacked layers. Overspending draws first from today's allowance, then from the rest of the cycle's discretionary money, then from an optional buffer. Only when those are exhausted does the app warn that protected money is at risk; it never silently takes protected savings. 1 Today's allowance The number on the home screen 2 Remaining discretionary money this cycle Future days get smaller instead of the plan breaking 3 Optional buffer, if you set one up Only the buffer you chose to make available Then, and only then: a warning Protected money is at risk. DollarSafe warns you — it never raids it silently.
The spillover order is fixed and visible in the app.

Honest differentiation

This is not envelope-category budgeting

Category budgeting asks "where should every dollar go?" DollarSafe asks "how much of the money I have is actually safe to spend today?" Both are legitimate. They are not the same tool, and if you love assigning every dollar, a category app may suit you better.

Category / envelope budgeting

  • Every dollar must be assigned to a category before the month works.
  • Overspending means moving money between envelopes by hand.
  • Answers "am I within my Food budget?"
  • Often counts expected income to make the plan balance.

DollarSafe

  • Works with zero categories. Categories exist, are optional, and are informational only.
  • Overspend is absorbed automatically by lowering future days.
  • Answers one question: what is safe to spend today?
  • Counts only money that has actually arrived.

Recommendations, never lockouts

DollarSafe shows consequences instead of prohibitions: "Spend $100 today → estimated safe tomorrow: $31/day." It is your money and the app never blocks it.

Savings are not spendable by default

$800 in checking plus $5,000 in savings is not $5,800 available. You decide which goals are protected; DollarSafe respects that decision.

"Can I buy this?" before you buy it

Enter an amount and see the effect first — what is left today, what your projected daily amount becomes, and whether bills stay protected.

One number, understandable at a glance

Start in manual mode with balances you type in yourself, or connect accounts and let balances sync. The engine is identical either way.
